Age and Soil Factors
More than half of East Ridge’s housing dates from the 1940s through the 1960s, and about a third was built from the 1970s through the 1990s. Most driveways here are decades old, built over regional soils known to expand and contract. Years of ground movement and temperature swings cause heavy wear. As long as the base has not failed, we can pave a new layer directly over the old one.
Prep and Patching
We prep the old surface before the new asphalt goes down. For a localized patch, we cut back to sound pavement, square the sides, clear loose material and water, apply a tack coat to the sides and bottom, place the asphalt mix, and compact it. We fill pothole repairs deeper than 4 inches in multiple layers, compacting each layer. For existing fissures, we use a mechanical crack router to open the gap, giving the new overlay a clean channel to grip.
Required Permits
Opening a city street surface or excavating in an East Ridge street, curb, alley, or public right-of-way requires a Street Cut Permit before work begins. A driveway built or modified within a state highway right-of-way requires a TDOT permit, including changes to an existing driveway entrance. We pull the necessary permits and schedule the inspections.

What this typically involves:
- Coordinate paver speed with mix production, delivery, and compaction so the paver can maintain a consistent speed.
- For Superpave mixes, begin breakdown rolling immediately behind the paver while the mix is hottest, and limit roller speed to 3 mph.
What It Typically Costs
