Signs you need milling
You will notice spider-web cracking across the surface, or edges crumbling so the whole thing looks gray and tired. Those are not just cosmetic problems. They are the top layer failing, and once it starts going, it accelerates. If you have had crack filling done two or three times and the cracks keep coming back in the same spots, crack filling seals the surface and buys time, but it does not stop the underlying movement. Most homeowners call us when they want the driveway to stop being a constant project.
What milling actually does
A milling machine shaves off the deteriorated top layer to a precise depth. What you are left with is a clean, rough-textured surface that the new asphalt bonds to directly. No middle layer to delaminate. No seams where patches were glued to old material. The rough texture left by the milling head gives the new asphalt something to grip. When we mill and overlay correctly, the new surface moves as one unit with whatever remains of the original structure.
Site conditions and drainage
Whitfield County’s Townley, Montevallo and Conasauga soils are high-runoff soils, so rain tends to run downhill rather than soak in readily. Periodic heavy-rain events test drainage and grading on every property. If drainage and grading are not right going in, a new overlay will fail the same way the old one did.
How the job runs on your property
We coordinate paver speed with mix production, delivery, and compaction so the paver can maintain a consistent speed. If the plant is running behind and the paver stops and starts, you will see a seam in the finished surface. Once the new asphalt is down, we roll it immediately while it is still hot. We use a vibratory steel-wheeled roller to compact the mix. For Superpave mixes, we begin breakdown rolling immediately behind the paver while the mix is hottest, and limit roller speed to 3 mph. Faster rolling does not give the mat time to seat properly.
Common questions we get on this work
Can you just pave over what I have without milling?
Sometimes, if the existing surface is relatively sound and level. But if there are cracks reflecting up, they tend to come through the new surface in the same spots. Milling removes that risk.
What about crack filling after the new surface is down?
We use a mechanical crack router to open and clean cracks before filling, which gives better adhesion than just pouring sealant over the surface. After a new overlay, we usually suggest waiting until the surface has had one full winter cycle before doing crack work.
Is a permit required for residential driveways in Dalton?
Under Georgia’s currently adopted 2024 International Residential Code with Georgia amendments, a permit is not required for most private driveway work unless you are doing structural work that changes drainage patterns or affects the public right-of-way.
