Evaluating the subgrade and base
An overlay is only as good as what sits under it. In Dalton and throughout Whitfield County, we build on chert-clay soils. This soil class has high volume change and low density, meaning it shifts heavily with moisture. We check the subgrade conditions before paving to ensure the foundation can support a new layer. If the base has failed in a localized area, we repair that section first so the shifting soil does not telegraph movement through the new surface.
Prepping damaged areas
Before the overlay goes down, we fix isolated failures. We use a mechanical crack router to open and clear out existing fissures. For a localized patch, we cut back to sound pavement, square the sides, and clear loose material and water. We apply a tack coat to the sides and bottom, place the asphalt mix, and compact it. If we are doing pothole repairs deeper than 4 inches, we place the material in multiple layers, compacting each layer. This creates a uniform, structural foundation for the final surface.

Laying the new surface and managing water
Dalton receives around 50 inches of rain in a typical year, so the driveway plan must account for moving runoff away from the pavement. We adjust the elevation of the new asphalt layer to correct drainage issues and prevent water from pooling. Once the surface is prepped and tack coat is applied, we lay the hot-mix asphalt. We use a vibratory steel-wheeled roller to compact the mat, creating a dense, finished surface that sits flush with your existing edges. Winter temperatures occasionally drop enough to cause minor freeze-thaw shifting, making proper drainage critical to extending the life of the overlay.
Overlay costs
We provide a written estimate after inspecting the driveway. The cost depends on the square footage, the thickness of the overlay, and how much patching the existing pavement requires. An overlay costs less than full replacement because we do not excavate and rebuild the entire base. We outline the exact material and labor requirements for your specific job in the proposal.
Getting Started Is Simple
-
Call or Text
Tell us what you're seeing and when it started, you'll get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
-
On-Site Inspection
A tech inspects the problem in person, no guessing from photos, no drive-by quotes.
-
Clear, Written Quote
You get the scope and the price in writing before any work starts. No surprises.

We Do the Work
Our crew does the work, checks it, and leaves the site clean. You see everything we did.
What this typically involves:
- Before applying tack coat, remove dust and dirt from the surface; tack coat does not replace cleaning.
- Mill below the distressed pavement, then sweep the milled surface repeatedly to remove dust and debris before overlaying.
What It Typically Costs
Typical ranges, not a fixed price - the exact number is confirmed in writing before work starts.
$250–$500
$100–$200
