Why cracks spread and when to act
Asphalt driveways develop cracks from thermal movement and moisture getting under the surface. A crack is an open channel for water to reach the gravel base underneath. Once that base gets saturated and goes through a freeze-thaw cycle, the materials separate. Left alone, cracks in Dalton driveways spread and connect. If you have a visible crack wider than a hairline, or notice water pooling along certain lines after rain, the crack is deep enough to direct runoff. Sealing it now prevents the base from washing out.
Cleaning and drying the crack
We start by removing vegetation and loose material from inside and around the crack. We use compressed air or a vacuum system to clean the gap completely, because debris stops the sealant from bonding. Next, we check that the crack and reservoir walls are dry. If we need to use hot-air blasting to dry the area, we do it immediately before applying sealant and carefully avoid burning the surrounding pavement. A clean, dry crack is required for a seal that holds.

Application equipment
We use an indirectly heated, mechanically agitated melter to keep the sealant at the right temperature throughout the application. The material travels through a heated hose to an application wand tip that lets us place it precisely inside the crack. The agitation keeps the sealant consistent, and the indirect heat prevents scorching the material before it reaches the surface.
Pricing for crack sealing
For crack sealing without routing, our pricing runs $90 to $150 per 100 linear feet. The total depends on how many linear feet of cracking you have and whether any of it requires extra prep due to vegetation or moisture. Wider cracks that need routing before sealing cost more because routing creates a proper reservoir for the sealant.

Permits and code requirements
Most crack sealing on a private residential driveway does not require a city permit. However, if a Dalton driveway job involves excavation in a public street, sidewalk, or alley, we must submit a written permit application first. Any driveway pavement in the street right-of-way must use a graded aggregate base under plant-mix asphalt. All our residential work follows the 2024 International Residential Code with Georgia amendments. We check if the cracking reaches into the street during the estimate so we can handle any permit requirements before starting.
