When overlay is the right call

If the surface is cracked, weathered, or showing shallow rutting from years of traffic, an overlay is usually the right move. We see this on driveways that are fifteen to twenty-five years old, where the top layer has oxidized and the surface texture has gone rough. As long as the aggregate base underneath is intact, we can bond a new mat to the old one to restore the surface.

What we actually do on an overlay job

We start with a milling machine to cut away ruts caused by mix deficiencies, or to level ruts caused by wear and consolidation. Milling opens up a clean, rough surface for the new material to grip. After milling, we run a mechanical broom across the entire area to clear all the millings and debris. We also raise manholes, catch basins, and other utility features to the level of the planned overlay. If those sit low after the new surface goes down, they become collection points for water and debris.

Handling Dalton's soil and weather

Whitfield County's Townley, Montevallo, and Conasauga soils are high-runoff soils, so rain tends to run downhill rather than soak in readily. Periodic heavy-rain events test drainage and grading on these properties. A proper overlay must account for this by grading toward drainage points so water does not pool against the edges.
