What Winter Weather Does to Asphalt
Cleveland gets hit by hard winter freezes that drive freeze-thaw cycles. Water works its way into cracks, freezes, expands, and punches the pavement apart from below, stressing buried pipes, slabs, and foundations. The Sun Belt SE regional soils here also carry shrink-swell potential, shifting with moisture changes. That ground movement transfers directly to the asphalt on top. We assess how the soil behaves under the surface before we pave.
Subgrade and Base Construction
We grade the subgrade to the planned elevations and drainage, then compact it until it is uniform and unyielding. Where soil conditions and the design call for it, we install separation fabric. Next, we spread and compact the aggregate base in the specified layers and thickness. We check the surface with a straightedge to confirm the grade is correct before laying asphalt.

Managing Cleveland's Flood Risk
Local floodplains run along the Hiwassee River, South Mouse Creek, Candies Creek, Fillauer Branch, and Cohulla Creek. Past floods have dropped more than a foot of rain in a single day, washing out roads and bridges. We check a property’s location before planning driveway grading or drainage changes to account for heavy runoff on vulnerable sites. If your property sits near these waterways, we plan the grading and subgrade work to move water away from the surface.
Winter Paving Limitations
Local asphalt plants do not operate during colder months. While cold-mix pothole repairs are available in winter, they do not last as well as hot-mix asphalt. We schedule new parking lot construction and major repairs when hot-mix is available to ensure the pavement cures correctly and withstands local freeze-thaw cycles.
Getting Started Is Simple
-
Call or Text
Tell us what you're seeing and when it started, you'll get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
-
On-Site Inspection
A tech inspects the problem in person, no guessing from photos, no drive-by quotes.
-
Clear, Written Quote
You get the scope and the price in writing before any work starts. No surprises.
-
We Do the Work
Our crew does the work, checks it, and leaves the site clean. You see everything we did.
What this typically involves:
- Begin rolling as soon as the mix can be compacted without displacement; keep the breakdown roller close behind the paver and continue until the mat is compacted and roller marks disappear.
- Review the project plans and specifications, and locate underground utilities before excavation.
